PIGMENTATION

What is it?

Pigmentation refers to the colour of our skin and our skin colour is determined by the type of melanocytes we have as part of our DNA. When our pigment darkens our skin, it is caused by over production to protect the barrier. This can be caused by a number of factors such as, but not limited to, trauma, hormones, specific medications and of course UV and our environment. Pigmentation generally falls into epidermal, dermal/melasma and mixed (which is a combination of both).

How can it present?

Hyper or hypo pigmentation, post inflammatory pigmentation, freckles, age and sunspots. Melasma/chloasma. Poikiloderma of civatte.

What can I do?

Wear SPF 30/50 daily and reapply. Work with pigment inhibitors in your products, consider modalities that will remove epidermal pigment superficially such as IPL, Laser and/or Skin Needling.
